Evoking strong emotion, red can represent the human condition. Its myriad variations have come to signify authority as well as love, energy, and beauty. Red warns us of peril and commands us to stop, but it can also indicate purity and good fortune. Red boldly represents political movements and religious identities. From the advent of our appreciation for this color in antiquity to its continued prominence in artistic and popular culture, this exhibition will span various world cultures through a range of media.

The exhibition will feature more than 70 artists, both established and emerging, ranging from the classical to the contemporary. American portraitists such as Gilbert Stuart imbued red in their stately paintings of prominent individuals to conjure authority. Robert Motherwell, Ad Reinhardt, and other major abstract painters displayed a deep fascination with red in their commanding compositions that evoke a sense of chromatic power. Alexander Calder prominently employed red in his two-dimensional works and in the mobiles for which he is most famous. Andy Warhol frequently used red in his artworks, from his bold and imposing silkscreened portrait of Vladimir Lenin saturated in bright red to his signature Campbell’s Soup Cans.

Artists today continue to captivate us with their interpretations of red through multiple perspectives. As Josef Albers wrote in 1963, “If one says ‘Red’ — the name of the color — and there are fifty people listening, it can be expected that there will be fifty reds in their minds. And one can be sure that all these reds will be very different.”

New York, NY- Celebrating Women’s History Month, artist and curator Chellis Baird presents a

group exhibition titled “From the Eyes of Her,” in collaboration with the NYC Culture Club and Port

Authority of NY & NJ. This outdoor showcase, situated at the World Trade Center, unites 16 women

artists whose works offer unique perspectives on space, through materials and compositions.

Featuring the art works of Nola Ayoola, Tirtzah Bassel, Layo Bright, Hedwig Brouckaert, Hope

Buzzelli, Anna Camner, Michele Oka Doner, Dana James, Tamara Kostianovsky, Jessica Frances

Gregoire Lancaster, Anastasia Lopoukhine, Amethyst Monet, Michaela Roman, Rachel Rubenstein,

Naomi Safran-Hon and Vadis Turner, "From the Eyes of Her” delves into the transformative power

of art in shaping our perceptions and memories.

The artists in this exhibition approach their practice from a female perspective, challenging

conventional notions of public and private spheres. Whether through their choice of medium or

thematic exploration, they invite viewers to reconsider their relationship with space and its impact

on daily life.

As we navigate our daily routines and movements, our interactions with space influence our sense

of comfort and familiarity. From the moment we awaken to our commute and return home, these

patterns shape our experiences and perceptions. "From the Eyes of Her" prompts us to reflect on

the significance of these routines and the disruptions that awaken us to new possibilities.

Established in 1987, Women’s History Month honors the enduring contributions of women

throughout history. Similarly, the Port Authority, founded in 1921, serves as a cornerstone of

transportation infrastructure, facilitating connectivity and societal development through land, air,

and sea travel. Together, these institutions underscore the vital role of women and infrastructure in

shaping our collective journey towards progress and growth.

Arcane 17 Presented in the Lower Gallery at The Seligmann Center takes its name and inspiration from the 1944 book Arcanum 17, written by Andre Breton with the help of fellow Surrealist and historian of Magic, Kurt Seligmann. While in exile from Europe during the final stages of World War Two, the text was written on a trip to Gaspé Peninsula in Quebec Canada. Inspired by the impermanence of Percé Rock juxtaposed with the global backdrop of a world war, Arcanum 17 conceives a spiritual revolution and resurrection of the society through women and metaphysical conceptions of femininity. In the spirit of this monumental text Arcane 17 will exhibit a presentation of Seligmann’s prints featured along side a selection of contemporary women artists, Chellis Baird, Nazli Efe, and Ophelia Arc.

Opening Reception Jan. 14, 2023

Exhibitions about motherhood run the risk of falling short in many ways. It is very difficult to adequately capture the breadth of the experience. It is easy to tell only one side of the story or one version of it. Perhaps most disconcertingly, in an attempt to expand on the lived experience of women, we face the threat of inadvertently pigeonholing them into the role of mother, rather than inter- rogating the role itself. We might be compelled to ask, “where are the exhibitions about fatherhood?” While these concerns are merited, to avoid discussing the complexity of motherhood seems to be setting aside an important conversation for fear of having it incorrectly. This exhibition works to expand the conversation showcasing work by 13 artists who have been or are being confronted by the social and practical realities of motherhood.

SEPTEMBER 7 – DECEMBER 19, 2021 | OPENING RECEPTION: SEPTEMBER 11, 4 – 6 PM

Based out of New York City, Spartanburg-SC native Chellis Baird (b. 1983) explores movement, dimension and fluidity in her woven paintings. Reconstructing the elements of a painting, Baird employs fabric, paint and wood to weave – not in the traditional sense – complex sculptural forms that expand beyond the edges of their frameworks. Inspired by Baird’s passion for color, dance, fashion and textiles, the tangled, monochromatic works featured in Tethered beckon viewers to explore their winding and intrinsically meditative compositions. The artist hopes viewers will “immerse themselves in the tactility of the human hand and spirit, with enough space to fill in and release their own emotions.” Baird received her BFA in textiles from Rhode Island School of Design and studied studio art at the Art Students League in New York City.
